Happy Ending

20140131-204315.jpg

Wrapped up in a situation that all at once begs to be done and undone, calling on you to make the very best of a bad situation, turning the darkest moments into the brightest hours. But it is not real. It is “fauxed” out, draped in dressing gowns of exquisite fabrics of every imaginable hue. When you look and see how beautiful it is you become distracted by the turn of a word onto it’s head. Of course that is what he meant which is precisely why he didn’t say it to you. But instead to her, in whispers and hushed tones and plush sheets and deepest conversation. Today, that is not yours. Tomorrow will be the same. The affection that they can see, the confessions that they can hear will not be gifted to you. Dim lights, dark corners, late nights, early disappearances – that is your gift. That is what occupies your little blue box. The words are right and the passion unmatched. But when the family is gathered, the friends are near, the children are playing and there is no sweet whisper in your ear ….. where is your happy ending?

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do … Or Is It?

20140130-205439.jpg

Dear You,
That was not an awkward pause, but indeed, a hard stop. Please govern yourself accordingly.
Over it,
Me
— — —- —- —–
Dear you,
I wanted to apologize for lying. You were right, it wasn’t me. It was you.
Done,
Me
—- —– —— —-
So, I was thinking, wouldn’t it be awesome if we were no longer together?
—- —- —- —- —-
Dear you,
As it turns out, I was just drunk. Not in love.
XO,
Me
—- —- —- —- —-
Dear you,
Maybe this Valentines Day we could try something different. Perhaps I could spend it with someone I like and you can do, well, whatever.
Thoughts?
Me

Reality

20140129-204605.jpg

You are luxurious and lovely and kind
Magnificent in all your ways.
Filling me with feelings never before known,
Wrapping me in the generosity of your being, the fullness of your spirit.
Making me forget about all that have come before.

You are luxurious and lovely and kind
Magnificent in all your ways.
Traveling the roads of endearment
Venturing deeper into waters of like, lust and desire
Becoming a part of every unfocused thought.

You are luxurious and lovely and kind
Magnificent in all your ways.
And with each passing day and every endless moment
I simply cannot wait for you to move
Out of my dreams
Into this reality.

Every Time

20140128-183634.jpg

If every time was like the first time, would it be bitter or sweet? Would it lift you up or knock you down to your knees?

If every time was like the first time, would it be as a dream come true or a nightmare from which you beg to wake?

If every time was like the first time, would it be the beauty or the beast. Would you brag about it to any who would listen or just the very least?

If every time was like the first time would you rush in headlong? Would you hesitate for a moment? Wait for the next song?

If every time was like the first time, would you change it? Perhaps a better story to tell? Make it seem as though it was much more?

But if every time was like the first time, then you might miss the fullness of this time and the next time would likely be the last time.

Where I’m From

20140127-194143.jpg

I come from a long line of beautiful women. Although it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, my eyes have seen these women and know that they are the epitome.

Some of these women I know, others of them I have never met outside of my imagination or in the pages of a book or  magazine. With rich hues and spirits the color of the setting sun – I am entranced by each one.

I come from a long line of beautiful women who live the words that “life and death are in the power of the tongue”. From distant places they come to me whenever I am in need; I don’t even have to ask or plead. If I am feeling lonely , I feel their warmth, their love.

When I am going astray I hear their words of redirection and I can only reflect on the fact that I am glad someone prayed for me.

My mind, my body, my soul, are wrapped in the comfort of these beautiful women. I come from a long line of beautiful women but I realize that I must stay on the journey that makes me a part of their legacy – their empire …

… a beautiful woman.

These Walls

20140123-213302.jpg

It is behind these walls that the story unfolds, that the words were shared and the lies unfold.

It is behind these walls where she spent her days, wondering when things would be better, wondering when things would change.

It is behind these walls that good was given, bad was taken and mess left in the wake.

It is behind these walls that the dreams dreamt were forever left behind, smoldering and dying.

It is behind these walls that better days seemed to be an illusion, a far off place, destined for those only by fate chosen.

It is behind these walls he considered from which there was no escape, only hopes to hope and useless words to taste.

It is behind these walls of the mind that bait and trap, set us up and force us to believe, that we will never be more than the smallest of these.

Perchance

20140123-075607.jpg

I pushed on the door absentmindedly
I was walking out
He was walking in

Looking down I didn’t notice him until I was upon him
His battle suit was freshly pressed ready for the wars of the day

I looked up
Our eyes met
I smiled
He smiled on his lips and his eyes
I said “Good morning”
He said “hey”

I was walking out
He was walking in

I wonder if he thought of me today

I wonder when he realized that I wasn’t who he thought I was

My Life: In Six Songs

20140121-215448.jpg

Recently, NPR proffered a bit of a challenge: “If you could tell your life story — chronologically, up to now — in six songs, what would they be?”

I was intrigued and so, I gave it a shot. This isn’t necessarily a story in the traditional sense but it takes a LOT of thought and creativity to represent your life in six measly songs!

I wouldn’t say that mine are necessarily lyrically literal but these songs capture the essence of my life up to now …

Southern Girl – Frankie Beverly

Got To Give It Up/Party – Marvin Gaye

I will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

Brown Skin – India Arie

A Change Is Gonna Come  – Sam Cooke

Crave – Gareth Asher

I would love to hear yours!
